A community is mourning the death of a state trooper. The New York state trooper was recently killed as the result of a deadly auto accident. Reports indicate that the other motorist may have struck the officer on purpose and the man is now being charged with first-degree murder.
The incident occurred on a recent Thursday along the interstate. The state trooper was conducting a routine traffic stop of a motorist who was speeding. While the officer was out of his vehicle, the driver of a Toyota pickup truck moved from the passing lane into the driving lane where the officer was standing. The vehicle slammed into the officer and instantly killed him. Reportedly, prior to the suspect striking the officer, he had sideswiped two other vehicles.
The suspect fled the area and was eventually apprehended by authorities. He was placed under arrest and booked into a county jail. On the day of the accident, authorities do not believe that he was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. He has previously been convicted of DUI in another state.
A deadly auto accident can be traumatizing for a victim’s surviving family members. It’s even more so when they learn that the incident was done intentionally. Undoubtedly, the family of the New York state trooper is reeling from the effects of losing a loved one in the blink of eye. Although the suspect was arrested, the victim’s family may still reserve the right to file a wrongful death claim against the suspect. A successfully litigated claim could allow them to cover many of their unfortunate damages.
