Arguments involving money have the potential to become escalated. This is true whether the disagreement is between New York friends or between a customer and a service provider. However, it is sometimes the case where an argument leads to accusations that one party or the other committed a crime.
An incident recently occurred in New Paltz, New York, in which a taxi driver accused a 26-year-old Congers, New York, man of threatening him and brandishing a handgun in the taxi. The man also reportedly used racially derogatory language in reference to the taxi cab driver. Reportedly, the dispute between the taxi cab driver and the accused was in regards to the amount of the cab fare. Police found the accused at a Mobil gas station.
The accused is facing two class E felony charges: second-degree reckless endangerment and second degree menacing. These charges are undoubtedly serious as they could involve significant penalties, such as time in jail, if convicted. The accused has been arraigned, and is currently in jail on a $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
It remains to be seen what will happen in this case, but anyone accused of crimes, such as these, may want to secure the representation of a criminal defense attorney. Often, a case can be made that shows the defendant did not actually commit the crime he or she is accused. But, it takes a professional to understand how to best apply the law to the facts of the case, to make a persuasive argument.
