The busy streets of New York are known to be a place of many car accidents. Unfortunately, these accidents can be dangerous and, all too often, deadly. This may be true for a case in which a 9-year-old girl was killed in a car accident on a recent Sunday.
Authorities responded to the scene of a fatal accident and conducted a preliminary investigation. Reportedly, a driver of a minivan crashed into a Hyundai sedan and a Toyota van, causing the roof of the Hyundai to be ripped off. The impact trapped the passengers and the child inside of the vehicle until they were freed by rescue crews. Five passengers were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, and they are listed in stable condition.
Tragically, the child later died at the hospital. Reports indicate that this was not the only collision the driver of the minivan was involved with that day. Reportedly, the minivan crashed into another vehicle earlier, but fled the scene. Eventually, the driver of the minivan was apprehended and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and criminally negligent homicide.
A car accident can be overwhelming for many victims who are faced with serious injuries. These accidents can be even more overwhelming when a family learns that a child was killed. The family of the child may wish to pursue a wrongful death claim against the driver of the minivan as an appropriate remedy to recoup damages. The injured victims may also have similar rights under New York law to pursue personal injury claims to recover lost wages and medical expenses.
