A 25-year-old man from the New York town of New Lisbon has been taken into custody, and he now faces certain drug charges, according to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office. A sheriff’s department spokeman said that a tip came in back in December regarding activity commonly associated with drug trafficking. This activity was allegedly occurring near the man’s residence. Because the individual was on parole, Cooperstown probation officers and Utica parole officers worked alongside sheriff’s department investigators on the case.

A Jan. 9 search of the home allegedly yielded six grams of cocaine, four grams of psilocybin mushrooms, a bottle of liquid steroids, 11 Suboxone sublingual films, and 16 amphetamine capsules. A variety of items commonly associated with the packaging of drugs were also confiscated. Cash, a rifle, and ammunition were also found. Finally, the search allegedly produced a stolen chain saw and stolen leaf blower related to a Jellystone campground burglary.

Following the search, the individual was taken into custody for a parole violation. He was initially confined to the Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail.

On Feb. 26, the man was formally charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree. Bail was set at $25,000, and he was returned to the correctional facility in lieu of bail. If convicted of all charges, the man could face a maximum 12-year prison term.

It is not uncommon for drug arrests to lead to multiple charges, in part because different types of drugs may be involved, and the possession of each can lead to a distinct and separate charge. An attorney for the accused may seek to get the number and/or severity of the charges reduced.
