One of the most common causes of severe injuries and death are auto accidents. This is true for this case in which 8 were killed in the tragic New York car accident. Lawsuits were filed and, recently, settlements were reached for undisclosed amounts.
The accident was reportedly caused by a wrong-way minivan driver. Back in 2009, a woman was on her way home, but for some reason, she ended up driving in the wrong lanes. She traveled for two miles until she ended up crashing into an SUV in a head-on collision. The aftermath of the crash left multiple people dead, including the driver of the minivan and her 2-year-old daughter.
Three men were also killed along with three other children. An autopsy was performed of the minivan’s driver, and it reportedly revealed that she was under the influence and had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash. The lawsuits were filed against the estate of the minivan’s driver and her brother who was the van’s owner.
One mistake on the roadway can lead to serious and deadly catastrophes, and, sadly, multiple lives were undoubtedly changed forever as a result of this car accident. The settlements will likely bring some form of comfort to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy. Families who have lost loved ones as a result of someone else’s actions may have the right to file wrongful death claims against other parties as appropriate legal remedies. The civil court system in New York may issue financial relief if evidence demonstrates that the deaths were caused by negligence of another party or parties.
