Getting injured in a car accident can be very frightening for victims. Injuries that are sustained in a crash can be very obvious, such as broken bones, abrasions or brain trauma. However, there are injuries that may be less noticeable, such as back pain, internal damage and neck aches. No matter how serious injuries may be, in can be crucial to seek medical treatment after a crash to identify and begin treatment for any conditions. This process can be significantly slowed down when the person responsible for a car accident does not stop to get help and make sure a victim is okay. Even though it is a crime to leave the scene of a crash, many negligent drivers decide to do so anyway because they think they can get away with it.
However, this is often not the case. Recently, for example, a driver in New York tried to flee the scene of an accident causing injuries only to get into a second crash shortly afterwards. The driver reportedly smashed into a car and left the scene, leaving a victim with minor injuries behind. The negligent driver continued on until he lost control of his van and crashed into a building, which started a fire. Luckily, no one was in the building at the time of the second accident.
Police were able to put out the fire and respond to the first accident that the driver had caused. They then charged the driver with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident causing injuries.
Not only is it extremely irresponsible to cause a hit-and-run accident, it is also against the law. In general, people who try to get away with fleeing the accident are already in violation of some other law, whether they have been drinking and driving or they do not have a valid driver’s license. In any case, victims of these types of accidents have the right to hold negligent drivers legally and financially accountable for their actions.
