On Jan. 30, five people were taken into custody and charged after authorities looked into a number of commercial burglaries, a home burglary and a theft at a business that have taken place since October 2013, according to Suffolk law enforcement personnel. Authorities investigated a home burglary and nearly a dozen commercial burglaries throughout several area towns. Residents and business owners reported missing items that included cash, cellphones and computers, and four individuals were detained for these. Three of these people, along with a fifth person, allegedly committed the theft from the business.
The people taken into custody include a 21-year-old man was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree burglary, criminal trespass, petty larceny and 11 counts of third-degree burglary. A 22-year-old man was charged with second-degree burglary and 12 counts of third-degree burglary, and an 18-year-old man was charged with criminal trespass, petty larceny and second-degree burglary.
One female juvenile who was charged with criminal trespass and petty larceny, and another teenager was charged with petty larceny, third-degree burglary and criminal trespass. All four men were detained overnight. It was not stated if the teenagers were to be transferred to adult court.
When someone is thought to be involved in a string of crimes, he or she could face serious penalties if there is a conviction. In some cases, the courts might look into a person’s drug use and recommend substance abuse treatment if the drug use is what led to the alleged crime. A criminal defense attorney might be able to negotiate a plea agreement for clients, especially if they are teens or young adults who do not have a prior criminal record and might benefit from getting help for a drug addiction.
